Armenian Relief
Society History
The Armenian Relief
Society (ARS), philanthropic organization, was founded in New
York City in 1910. The ARS is the first and largest Armenian international
women's organization governed by volunteers. The primary mission
of the organization is to provide emergency help and social services
to the communities throughout the world.
The ARS of Western
USA (ARS-WR) is one of the 12 regions of the ARS International.
Its regional operations are coordinated through its headquarters,
in Glendale, California.
In 1915 the first
chapter of the Western Region was founded in Fresno (Mayr) Chapter
followed by (Mayr) Hollywood in Los Angeles in 1918. Thereafter,
as the region grew, so did the chapters.
In response to the
growing needs of the communities in the Western United States, the
ARS - WR was established in 19854 as a region. Today, the region
includes 26 chapters, 16 Saturday schools, five social service offices,
two after school Armenian schools, one after school program in Hollywood
and a Child, Youth and Family Guidance Center.
The 26 chapters of
the region are located throughout the communities west of the Mississippi
River.
Although the chapters
are responsible primarily for the numerous activities within their
local communities, this does not preclude their active participation
and extensive support of the programs and projects initiated and
coordinated by the Regional Executive.
